Laser Q & A

What is laser treatment?

Lasers can be utilized to treat a variety of cosmetic issues. Laser is actually an acronym for “light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.” Lasers transmit, bounce, and focus intense light energy into a targeted area to achieve a specific result.

What are some common cosmetic laser procedures?

Cosmetic laser procedures are immensely popular for people who don’t want the expense, downtime, or invasiveness of surgery. Some skin conditions often treated with lasers are:

  • Hair removal
  • Wrinkles, lines, and crow’s feet
  • Port wine stains
  • Scars
  • Age and sun spot removal
  • Tattoo removal
  • Skin tightening
  • Spider veins
  • Acne and acne pocks

Different types of lasers are used for each specific condition. Dr. Ghosh will meet with you to discuss your specific goals, which laser therapy may be best for you, and what you can expect during treatment and afterward.

What’s the difference between ablative and non-ablative lasers?

Dr. Ghosh and the team at Aesthetics and Laser Wellness use two main types of lasers: ablative and non-ablative.

Ablative

Ablative lasers are a more aggressive option, in that they take off the top layer of skin in order to initiate a healing response. Numbing agents are used to help you tolerate the pain associated with the procedure. The recovery time takes about two or three full weeks and the results can be dramatic.  Dr. Ghosh uses an ablative laser to treat the following skin conditions:

  • Acne pocks
  • Lesions
  • Pigmentation problems
  • Sunspots

Following ablative laser resurfacing, your skin may be red, itchy and raw. Dr. Ghosh may prescribe an antibiotic to prevent infection. While ablative skin resurfacing is a more intense treatment than non-ablative, the effects are typically more significant and longer lasting

Non-ablative

Unlike ablative laser procedures, a non-ablative laser session doesn’t require any downtime. The laser forces heat energy into your skin’s deepest layers of skin, prompting your collagen to regenerate. Non-ablative laser treatments work best on:

  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Blotchy skin
  • Stretch marks

Non-ablative procedures don’t require any time from work or school, although you may experience minor swelling and redness.
